Ukrainians scrap aging Ladas and Daewoos as cars hit 25-year mark
In August 2026, Ukrainians officially scrapped 2,241 vehicles, mostly passenger cars, primarily due to their old age, according to the Institute of Automotive Market Research. The average age of scrapped vehicles was 25 years, making restoration or resale economically pointless. Passenger cars accounted for 1,662 scrapped units (74.2%), followed by trucks at 335 (14.9%), with motorcycles, buses, and trailers making up the rest. The most scrapped models were VAZ/Lada 2106 and Daewoo Lanos. Kyiv recorded the highest number of scrapped vehicles at 224, followed by Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, and Lviv regions. Meanwhile, Ukrainians purchased nearly 4,700 used cars imported from the US in August, averaging 5.7 years old, with Tesla Model Y being the most popular.
