Ukrainians pay for hidden electricity: why your meter spins while devices are off
Ukrainian households are paying for hidden electricity consumption, as appliances left plugged in but turned off still draw power in standby mode, potentially adding up to significant annual costs. The energy company "Prykarpattiaoblenergo" warns that televisions, microwaves, air conditioners, washing machines, and other devices consume small amounts of electricity even when not in use. The largest hidden consumers include electric stoves (4-8 kWh), water heaters (2-3 kWh), and air conditioners (2.2-3.37 kWh). Electricity tariffs for households remain fixed at 4.32 UAH per kWh through at least the end of 2026, according to Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal. Gas prices for most Ukrainians are also unchanged at 7.96 UAH per cubic meter until April 2027.
