Ukrainian linguist explains correct names for jewelry: not 'zhemchuh' but 'perly'

A Ukrainian linguist, Oleksandra Kasianova, has clarified the correct Ukrainian names for jewelry, identifying common words like "жемчуг" (zhemchuh) as Russian calques. She stated that the proper Ukrainian term for pearls is "перли" (perly), not "жемчуг." The linguist explained that "серебро" should be "срібло" (sriblo), "кольцо" is "каблучка" (kabluchka) or "перстень" (persten), and "цепочка" is "ланцюжок" (lantsiuzhok). The word "буси" is surzhyk, with the correct term being "намисто" (namysto). She also noted that "ізумруд" is correctly "смарагд" (smarahd), and "брильянт" is a Russian calque, with the proper word for a cut diamond being "діамант" (diamant). Kasianova added that "кульчики" (kulchyky), a regional term for earrings used in western Ukraine, is a Polonism but not an error. She also mentioned traditional Ukrainian jewelry names such as zhardy, dukachi, herdany, and korali, which are considered normative in modern usage.
