Ukraine's SBU and HUR clash over Kyiv shootout: assassination plot or abduction?

Ukraine's SBU and HUR intelligence agencies gave conflicting accounts of a September 2 shootout in Kyiv, with the SBU claiming it foiled an assassination plot and HUR alleging an abduction. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. The SBU said Stepan Kaplunov, a deputy commander of the Russian Volunteer Corps under HUR, was tasked by Russian special services to assassinate a Russian opposition leader and Ukrainian soldiers. HUR commander "Tymur" countered that SBU officers kidnapped Kaplunov and fired on unarmed HUR personnel. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the incident "absolutely disgraceful" and dismissed an SBU department head. Three HUR servicemen were wounded, two seriously. Kaplunov's lawyer claims his client's confession video was made under threat of death.
