Ukraine's energy winter readiness may hit only 50-70% at some facilities

A Ukrainian lawmaker stated that plans to prepare the country's energy system for winter will likely not be fully fulfilled, with the actual readiness of some facilities reaching only 50–70% by the end of the year. Serhii Nahorniak, a member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy and Housing Services, said contractors often accept deadlines they know they cannot meet. He claimed this leads to distorted information for leadership, stating, "We partially live in a lie," as officials fear reporting real timelines. The comments follow President Zelenskyy's June 2024 pledge to build 1 GW of gas generation in 2024. In September 2026, projects for 1.5 GW of new capacity were suspended, and Kyiv's authorities have admitted the capital is only 50% ready for winter.
