Ukraine urges allies to send interceptor missiles after Russian strike on Kyiv

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha appealed to allies for interceptor missiles after a massive Russian strike on Kyiv, stating that every delayed decision costs lives and that missiles sitting in warehouses must be used to protect Ukrainian skies immediately. Sybiha made the remarks on Tuesday, September 8, commenting on the overnight Russian attack on Kyiv. He noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin struck the capital right after US President's special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner departed. The minister said ballistic missiles "speak louder than his words about diplomacy," calling the strikes on residential buildings "senseless terror" that proves no allied decision can be postponed. Sybiha urged allies to follow Germany's example and close all "Russian houses" in Europe, arguing that pressure on Moscow facilitates diplomacy rather than hindering it. The overnight attack involved ballistic and cruise missiles, with drone attacks continuing in the morning, causing fires at 16 locations and killing at least two people with 10 injured. On September 1, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas noted some countries have Patriot interceptors nearing expiration, with Greece and Spain reportedly holding PAC-2 missiles.
