Ukraine Strikes Russian Gas Capital in Deepest Drone Attack Yet

Ukraine has conducted its first drone strike deep inside Russia, hitting the gas-producing city of Novy Urengoy in Siberia, approximately 2,800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. President Zelensky called the attack "completely justified" on X. The Russian regional governor said the attack was repelled, but falling debris caused a fire, with no injuries reported. Novy Urengoy, located in the Yamalia district, is a key hub for Russian gas production, often called the "Russian gas capital." Ukraine confirmed the strike, with Zelensky stating it was carried out "in a way the enemy truly feels." This follows a July Ukrainian attack on Omsk, 2,500 kilometers from the border, as Kyiv continues targeting Russian oil refineries, causing fuel shortages. Zelensky also warned airlines to avoid Russian airspace due to the high volume of Ukrainian drones. Meanwhile, Russia launched overnight attacks on Ukraine, killing at least five people across Kyiv, Sumy, and Mykolajiv, and striking a border crossing with Moldova, killing two.
