UK wind power reaches record 70% of electricity supply

On December 15, UK wind power generated a record 22,243 megawatts, supplying 54% of the country's electricity. This surpassed the previous record of 21,998 megawatts set in January 2023, according to the National Energy System Operator. By December 16, wind power accounted for 70% of Britain's electricity supply. This significant increase reflects the UK's growing reliance on renewable energy sources as part of its goal to decarbonize the electricity grid by 2030. The record was achieved due to above-average winds, particularly in Scotland, which has many wind turbines. The UK continues to diversify its energy mix, with gas still playing a major role, but wind energy is becoming increasingly dominant.
