UK Unprepared for Extreme Heat, Study Finds

The U.K. remains unprepared for extreme heat despite a summer of record temperatures, drought and wildfires, according to a new analysis by the National Heat Risk Commission. The report warns that extreme heat is a current national threat affecting infrastructure, public services and productivity, with early estimates for June 2026 heatwaves showing losses of up to £2.36 billion and 24 million lost working hours. It cites a lack of governance as a key barrier. The commission recommends a national heat resilience strategy with clear accountability, improved heat alerts and nature-based solutions. Summer 2026 was provisionally the warmest on record, with temperatures surpassing 35 degrees Celsius in four consecutive months.
