UK reports five cases of new mpox strain with low risk to public
The UK has reported five confirmed cases of the Clade Ib strain of mpox since October 30. The first case involved a traveler returning from Africa, followed by three cases from the same household, all of whom have recovered. A fifth case was identified in Leeds. The UK Health Security Agency states that the risk to the general population remains low. Investigations are ongoing to trace contacts and understand how the latest case was acquired. Symptoms of mpox include fever, headache, and a rash that can lead to blisters. Mpox spreads through direct contact with infected individuals or materials. Those at higher risk include close contacts of infected persons and travelers to affected regions. The World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency due to the changing epidemiology of the virus.
