UK launches autumn Covid booster targeting rapidly spreading XEC variant
The UK is launching an autumn booster vaccine targeting the JN.1 strain, which is linked to the rapidly spreading XEC variant. The booster will be available from October 3 to December 20 for vulnerable groups, including those over 65 and frontline health workers. Covid cases in the UK have risen by 31.5% in one week, with 2,213 cases reported by September 18. The XEC strain, first identified in Germany, has been found in 27 countries and is believed to be highly transmissible. The updated booster aims to provide good protection against severe illness from XEC. Symptoms of the variant are similar to other Covid strains, including fever, cough, and fatigue. Individuals experiencing symptoms are advised to stay home and limit contact with others.
