UK Commons vote advances assisted dying legislation for England and Wales
A recent vote in the UK House of Commons has moved assisted dying closer to legalization in England and Wales. The proposal allows terminally ill adults with less than six months to live to choose to end their lives. The vote passed with 330 MPs in favor and 275 against. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer supported the bill, while some MPs, including Diane Abbott, expressed concerns about vulnerable individuals being pressured into choosing assisted dying instead of receiving proper end-of-life care. The bill will now go to committee stage for further examination and amendments. It will face additional scrutiny in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords before any law changes can be finalized, likely not until next year.
