Uganda MPs verify digital number plate tracking works, flag improvement areas

independent.co.ug —

Uganda's Parliamentary Committee on Physical Infrastructure, led by Chairperson Mwine Mpaka, visited the Police Command Centre at Naguru to verify the Digital Number Plate System's tracking capabilities, confirming it works while identifying areas for improvement. Police ICT Director AIGP Felix Baryamwisaki reported that 337 of 375 stolen vehicles were recovered, a 90 percent success rate. MPs tested the system with their own plates and confirmed data is stored in Uganda, though concerns remain over plate issuance delays, production costs, and contractor capacity. The production facility operates at 2,500 kits daily with 80 percent localization and over 300 Ugandan employees. The committee noted the backlog is cleared and focus now shifts to improving institutional cooperation, police procedures, and communication with motorists.
