UC Berkeley launches open-source AI model rivaling OpenAI's o1-preview for under $450

UC Berkeley's NovaSky team has released an open-source AI model, Sky-T1-32B-Preview, which matches OpenAI's o1-preview in math and coding tasks. It was developed in just 19 hours for under $450 using eight Nvidia H100 GPUs. Sky-T1 was created by fine-tuning Alibaba's Qwen2.5-32-Instruct and training it with synthetic data. While it performs well, it did not exceed o1-preview on advanced physics questions. The quick development and low cost of Sky-T1 highlight the potential for affordable AI models. This could benefit smaller labs and organizations seeking to compete with larger tech companies in the AI field.
