Typhoon No. 24 weakens to tropical depression; heavy rain risk persists in western to eastern Japan through Sept. 10

Typhoon No. 24 is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression by the morning of September 7, while a stationary front is expected to bring heavy rain to Pacific-side regions of western to eastern Japan through around September 10. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued an emergency warning at 5:28 a.m. on September 7, declaring Level 5 landslide special alerts for the Izu Islands, where record rainfall has exceeded a typical September's monthly total. Heavy rain warnings are also in effect for Pacific coastal areas of eastern and northeastern Japan, with risks of landslides, flooding, and river overflows. The typhoon, located near Minamidaitojima at 3 a.m., is moving east-northeast. A front slowly advancing northward will remain nearly stationary until around September 10, with warm moist air from the typhoon's east side intensifying rainfall.
