Typhoon No. 24 to become tropical depression; heavy rain may last through Sept. 10

Typhoon No. 24, moving slowly near Minamidaitojima, is expected to weaken into a tropical depression by the afternoon of September 7, but heavy rain may persist until around September 10. The typhoon is moving north-northeast at 10 km/h with a central pressure of 990 hPa and maximum sustained winds of 18 m/s. The active autumn rain front near Japan's southern coast could bring heavy rainfall, especially to Pacific-side regions from western to eastern Japan. Forecast 24-hour rainfall through September 8 includes 200 mm in Tohoku and 180 mm in Kanto-Koshin. Additional heavy rain is expected through September 10, with potential for localized increases if linear precipitation zones form.
