Two arrested on suspicion of arson after Folkestone hotel fire

bbc.co.uk —

Two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire at the Grand Burstin Hotel in Folkestone that forced around 280 people to evacuate. Kent Police detained a 38-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, who have since been released while inquiries continue. The blaze broke out in the hotel's basement at about 01:20 BST on Saturday, with 26 fire engines responding. An additional 90 people were relocated from neighbouring Pavilion Court due to safety concerns, and road closures remain in place for investigation work. The fire is being treated as suspicious, and police are appealing for witnesses. Britannia Hotels Group, which operates the hotel, said it is fully cooperating with authorities, while the council is arranging alternative housing for affected residents during structural assessments.
