Tui flight returns to Manchester after cabin pressure failure puts passengers at risk
A Tui flight with 193 people on board had to return to Manchester Airport shortly after takeoff due to a failure to pressurize. An investigation revealed that maintenance workers left a switch off, which the pilots did not notice. The Boeing 737-8K5 took off for Kos, Greece, on October 17, 2023, but triggered a cabin altitude warning shortly after reaching 15,000 feet. Passengers were at risk of low oxygen levels, known as hypoxia, but no injuries were reported. The report noted that the pilots, who were on standby duty, failed to follow emergency procedures after the warning. They mistakenly believed the engine bleed switches were on before takeoff. The issue was resolved after the crew turned the switches on and decided to return to Manchester.
