TSEA proposes safety measures to reduce Rama II accidents

BangkokPost.com

The Thailand Structural Engineers Association (TSEA) has called for new measures to reduce accidents on Rama II Road and similar construction sites. This comes after a troubling trend of repeated accidents in these areas. TSEA president Amorn Pimanmas shared proposals with the opposition People's Party (PP) leader, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut. The recommendations include urgent safety reviews of ongoing projects, especially those near public roads. They emphasize the need for legal measures to improve safety and oversight in construction. Amorn stressed that current laws mainly regulate engineers but should include site supervisors, laborers, and technicians. He suggested that all workers in large projects should receive training and certification, particularly in state-funded projects. In addition, TSEA proposed creating a registration system for small contractors involved in essential tasks like steel structure installation and demolition. Regular site inspections and the installation of CCTV cameras were also recommended to enhance safety. While TSEA supports a points deduction system for contractors as a penalty, Amorn pointed out that preventive measures are more important. Natthaphong vowed to collaborate with local MPs to implement these changes, noting that many accidents on Rama II Road have caused injuries but resulted in little accountability. In related news, Surachet Laophulsuk, the governor of the Expressway Authority of Thailand, announced that all debris was cleared following a beam collapse at the Dao Khanong toll gate last Saturday.
