Trump Administration Threatens to Cut Smithsonian Support

The Trump administration has threatened to cut federal agencies' support for the Smithsonian, escalating its conflict with the institution over its leadership and content. The move follows previous threats to reduce federal funding for the museum complex. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and White House Domestic Policy Council Director Vince Haley sent a letter to the Smithsonian's governing board, stating agencies cannot support it under current leadership through artifact loans, procurement, or discretionary grants. The letter also alleged potential violations of anti-discrimination laws through diversity practices. The Smithsonian, comprising 21 museums and the National Zoo, had no immediate comment. Historians and civil rights advocates have denounced the attacks, while the administration has also ordered critical signs installed outside the National Museum of American History and launched a review of some museums.
