Tokyo and Tohoku face heavy rain risk as Kita Ward issues Level 4 evacuation order

Heavy rain is expected to trigger linear precipitation bands from the Tokai to Tohoku regions, prompting a Level 4 evacuation order in Tokyo's Kita Ward. If such bands form over Tokyo's 23 wards or Tama area, it would be the first time since the Japan Meteorological Agency began issuing these warnings in 2021. Rain intensified across Tokyo by Sunday evening, with the Kita Ward issuing evacuation orders and opening shelters. Heavy rain and strong winds also hit Kanagawa's Miura Peninsula and Yokohama, while Chiba's Soga Station area, which saw 4,000 stranded commuters last month, experienced continued downpours. The JMA forecasts up to 300mm of rain in Tokai, 250mm in Kanto-Koshin, and 200mm in Tohoku and Kinki over 24 hours until Monday evening. Hachijo Island recorded about 110mm of rain in one hour, with rivers turning muddy and record rainfall reported.
