Thyroid issues may cause tearfulness, endocrinologist warns
Russian endocrinologist Margarita Belousova warned that tearfulness may indicate thyroid problems, with symptoms varying depending on whether hormone function is increased or decreased. In hypothyroidism, when hormones are insufficient, patients may experience fatigue, drowsiness, chilliness, dry skin, constipation, poor concentration, sluggishness, and depressed mood. In thyrotoxicosis, excess hormones can cause sleep disturbances, rapid heartbeat, sweating, heat intolerance, weight loss despite normal appetite, emotional instability, and anxiety. Belousova noted tearfulness and irritability alone are not specific signs, as they often stem from fatigue, stress, or lack of sleep. She advised consulting a therapist or endocrinologist if these emotional changes persist alongside physical symptoms.
