Thousands gathered at Te Papiouru Marae in Rotorua to honor Sir Robert Gillies, the last member of the 28th Māori Battalion, who passed away at 99. The ceremony included kapa haka performances and personal tributes from attendees. Sir Buck Shelford shared memories of Gillies, expressing sadness over his passing and reflecting on the lessons learned from his life. Defence Force Air Marshal Tony Davies highlighted Gillies' efforts for Māori soldiers' recognition. Following the service, Gillies will be taken to St Faith's Church for a gun salute before being buried at Kauae Marae next to his wife.
