The WHO worries about rising maternal mortality globally, especially in Africa
Despite progress in the last two decades, the World Health Organization (WHO) expresses concern over persistently high maternal mortality. In 2023, approximately 260,000 women died globally during or shortly after childbirth, with many deaths preventable. The WHO warns that reduced international aid, including from the United States, may reverse progress. Countries may be forced to cut vital services. The risk remains especially high in parts of Africa, with Nigeria having the highest number of deaths in 2023. A concerning trend is emerging in the United States, where maternal mortality is increasing. These developments may jeopardize the WHO's goal to reduce maternal mortality by 2030.
