The Age wins 14 awards at Quill Awards 2025
The Age's editorial team has made history by winning a record 14 awards at this year's Quills. This includes the prestigious Graham Perkin Journalist of the Year award, which was won by Nick McKenzie. He is the first journalist to receive this honor three times in the award's 49-year history. McKenzie, along with colleagues Ben Schneiders and David Marin-Guzman, also won the Gold Quill for their investigation called "Building Bad." This series exposed organized crime's influence on Australia's powerful CFMEU union. The judges praised the work for its deep public interest impact. In total, The Age received the most awards of any media outlet this year, more than double the number received by the ABC. The team earned recognition across 41 nominations in 21 categories. Among other notable winners, crime journalist John Silvester was awarded Scoop of the Year for his work on a cold case murder investigation. Michael Bachelard won two awards for his investigations. One was for “Road to Ruin,” a feature on Robert Farquharson’s murder conviction, and the other for a podcast called "Trial by Water." The Age's visual storytelling team won the Indigenous Affairs Reporting Quill for their investigation into carbon companies. In the artwork category, Marija Ercegovac won for her illustration highlighting economic issues in Victoria. The Age also dominated the cartoon category, with Badiucao winning for "Albo’s Choice." Additional awards included coverage of women in sports and a profile on jockey Jamie Kah. The Age's achievements reflect their commitment to impactful journalism, with praise from their editor, Patrick Elligett. He noted the talent and dedication of the staff, along with the support from their subscribers. The Age also received several commendations in various categories, underscoring its position as a leader in Australian journalism.
