Texas nuns dismissed after dispute with bishop and Vatican approval
A group of nuns in Arlington, Texas, has been dismissed from their Carmelite order after a dispute with the Bishop of Fort Worth. The Vatican approved their removal due to their defiance of church authority and affiliation with the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X. The nuns, led by Reverend Mother Teresa Agnes Gerlach, were accused of breaking vows and resisting oversight from the newly appointed leader, Mother Marie of the Incarnation. The nuns formally associated with the Society of St. Pius X in August 2024, which the Vatican views as a significant breach. In response, Gerlach rejected the dismissal, claiming it was based on false statements and personal motives. She invited supporters to continue attending Latin Mass at the monastery, asserting their commitment to the Carmelite tradition.
