Telescope images show crater from SpaceX rocket impact on Moon

morgenpost.de (German)

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket upper stage crashed into the Moon, creating a 30-meter-wide crater after hitting at 8,700 km/h. The four-tonne, 12-meter piece impacted uncontrollably Wednesday morning German time. The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope detected lithium lines in the impact cloud, likely from the rocket; sodium probably came from lunar soil. SpaceX has not confirmed the event. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to fly over the site in days. A previous unplanned rocket impact on the Moon occurred about four years ago.
