Tamil Nadu to Digitize Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration From September 15

Tamil Nadu will digitize driving licenses and vehicle registration certificates (RC) starting September 15, 2026, eliminating the need to wait for physical cards to arrive by post. Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced the change under Rule 110 in the state assembly. Currently, applicants pay a ₹250 fee and wait up to a month for a chip-enabled card to be mailed. Under the new system, digital documents can be downloaded to a smartphone or printed, and those passing driving tests will receive digital licenses the same day. The digital documents will feature QR codes for easy verification by officials, helping curb fake documents. Lost or damaged licenses and RCs can be re-downloaded, and an "Anywhere Registration/Licensing" system will allow applications at any regional transport office.
