Tamil Nadu seeks GI tag for traditional sea-salt dried fish from Rameswaram
Tamil Nadu is seeking a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for Ramanathan's traditional sea-salt dried fish, known as Pattarai Karuvadu. This method, which has been practiced for generations, uses local resources to preserve fish and enhance its flavor. The process involves treating fish with turmeric and burying them in mud or sand, which helps maintain their natural taste. This unique preservation technique is particularly suited for larger fish species and is a significant part of the local fishing culture in Rameswaram. Dried fish accounts for 20% of India's total fish production, with Tamil Nadu contributing 50% of that. The GI tag aims to protect this traditional method and support local industries involved in dried fish production.
