Tamil Nadu Assembly urges Centre to make Tamil principal language of Madras High Court

The Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday urging the Union government to recognize Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. This marks the second such resolution, following a similar one adopted on December 6, 2006. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, who moved the resolution, cited Tamil's ancient heritage and its 17 crore global speakers. The resolution requests approval under Article 348(2) of the Constitution and Section 7 of the Official Languages Act, 1963, to use Tamil alongside English in court judgments, subject to Governor and Presidential authorization. This is the seventh resolution passed by the ruling TVK since May, though such measures lack legal sanctity and serve mainly as political pressure. A 2018 statement by the then Union Law Minister noted the Supreme Court's full bench had not agreed to a similar earlier proposal.
