Taliban Officials' Moldova Visit Sparks Political Uproar

A visit by three Taliban officials to Moldova has sparked a political uproar in the Eastern European country, where the government has distanced itself from the trip and launched an investigation into how the visas were issued. The officials from Afghanistan's Agriculture Ministry arrived in Chisinau on August 3 after being invited by Moldovan official Vasile Sarban, who said he acted at the request of private companies seeking export markets. Moldova's Foreign Ministry stressed it does not recognize the Taliban government, and Prime Minister Vasile Tofan called the affair "embarrassing and unacceptable." The Taliban, which seized power in 2021, has used the trip to boost its international image, with state media providing extensive coverage. Russia is the only country that formally recognizes the Taliban, though several others maintain unofficial ties.
