Syrian Kurds celebrate peace deal; coastal violence persists
Syrian Kurds celebrated a new deal with the Damascus government, which includes a cease-fire and plans to integrate Kurdish forces into the Syrian army. This agreement aims to stabilize the region and allow displaced people to return home. In contrast, coastal areas in Syria are experiencing violence, with clashes resulting in hundreds of civilian deaths, particularly among the Alawite minority. Many families have fled to Lebanon, with over 7,600 reported to have crossed the border recently. Syrian authorities have formed a committee to investigate the violence and announced arrests related to the attacks. The U.N. has documented at least 111 civilian deaths, while other reports suggest the number could be much higher.
