Swedish sailor to race around the world in 1968-style Golden Globe Race

The Golden Globe Race, a solo around-the-world sailing competition replicating 1968 conditions, starts September 6 from Les Sables d'Olonne, France, with Swedish sailor Pär Nyman among the 16 participants. Nyman, 57, will sail 30,000 nautical miles over eight months using only paper charts and a sextant, with no GPS or electronic aids. A Stockholm-based team led by Giulio Mola has equipped eight boats with a one-way live streaming system for global viewers. The race, held for the fourth time, has seen only nine of roughly fifty starters finish historically. Nyman, sailing the Lazy Otter, completed his 4,000-mile qualifying voyage and views the challenge as a personal test of character.
