Swedish court convicts man of hate crime for desecrating Holy Quran
A Swedish court has found Salwan Najem guilty of hate crimes for publicly desecrating the Holy Quran and making derogatory comments about Muslims. He received a suspended sentence and a fine, differing from previous cases that did not result in convictions. The court emphasized that while criticism of religion is allowed, Najem's actions went beyond acceptable debate and expressed contempt for Muslims. This ruling follows heightened tensions between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries due to the Quran burnings. Najem's fellow campaigner, Salwan Momika, was shot dead last week before his verdict was announced. No charges have been filed in his killing, although five people were briefly detained.
