Sweden clears cargo ship of sabotage claims after Baltic Sea cable damage investigation
Swedish authorities have released the Malta-flagged cargo ship Vezhen after an investigation found no evidence of sabotage related to damage to a fiber-optic cable between Sweden and Latvia. The damage was attributed to bad weather and equipment issues. The Vezhen was seized on January 26, suspected of intentionally damaging the cable. However, prosecutors stated that the incident was accidental, caused by the ship's anchor being dropped during severe weather while transporting fertilizer from Russia to South America. The ship's operator confirmed that the crew is safe and has resumed their journey. They emphasized that there was no malicious intent involved, contradicting ongoing media narratives suggesting a Russian plot.
