Supreme Court of India rules refusal to marry is not abetment to suicide
The Supreme Court of India ruled that a partner's refusal to marry cannot be considered as abetment to suicide. The court emphasized that heartbreaks are a normal part of life and do not constitute instigation to take one's life. This decision overturned the conviction of a man whose lover committed suicide after he declined to marry her. The court stated that it must be proven that the accused's actions left the partner with no choice but to end her life. The ruling clarified that simply refusing marriage does not amount to provoking someone to commit suicide. The court noted that the woman had brought poison with her, indicating a premeditated decision rather than a reaction to the man's refusal.
