Supreme Court declares reviewing children's murder sentences unconstitutional
The Supreme Court ruled that the practice of reviewing sentences for children convicted of murder is unconstitutional. This decision affects young offenders, stating that life sentences should only be given if the child's actions are similar to an adult's. The court's ruling came from an appeal by a young man convicted of murdering Urantsetseg Tserendorj in Dublin in 2021. The court found that the judge did not have the authority to set a review date for his life sentence. As a result, some young offenders now serving life sentences with review dates may have grounds to appeal. The case will return to court later in March for final orders.
