Study links gut bacteria and genetics to mental health disorders in IBD patients
A new study has found links between gut bacteria, genetic variants in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and mental health disorders. Patients with IBD and comorbid mental disorders showed lower diversity in gut microbiota, suggesting potential biomarkers for these conditions. The research involved 507 IBD patients and 75 healthy controls. It revealed that IBD patients with mental disorders had distinct microbial patterns and lower microbial diversity compared to those without mental disorders. Specific genetic variants were also identified that may influence gut bacteria related to both IBD and mental health. Overall, the study suggests that gut microbiota and genetic factors associated with IBD could serve as potential targets for treating mental health disorders in these patients. However, the study's sample size for mental disorders was small, and further research is needed.
