Study finds unipedal balance is key indicator of neuromuscular aging in older adults
A recent Mayo Clinic study published in PLOS One found that unipedal balance is a key indicator of neuromuscular aging. The study involved 40 healthy participants over 50, divided into younger and elderly groups, and measured balance, strength, and gait. Researchers discovered that balance significantly declines with age, while strength also decreases, but gait showed no age-related changes. Unipedal balance, especially on the non-dominant side, declined by 2.2% per decade, making it a reliable measure for assessing aging. The findings suggest that unipedal balance tests could be used for early detection of neuromuscular decline in older adults. This approach may help guide interventions to maintain health and independence as people age.
