Study finds over 50% drop in snow depth on Himalayan glacier raises flood risks
A study by the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) found over a 50% reduction in snow depth on the Sutri Dhaka Glacier in June 2024. This significant drop raises concerns about faster glacier melting and potential flooding risks. NCPOR scientists have been monitoring Himalayan glaciers to assess climate impacts and environmental risks. They warn that reduced snow depth can lead to increased glacial lake outburst floods, similar to the disaster in Sikkim in October 2023. In response to these alarming trends, NCPOR is expanding its research on Himalayan glaciers. This includes studies in the eastern Himalayas and wintering missions to better understand the effects of global warming on these critical water sources.
