Strava's geolocation data exposed movements of Macron's security team, Russian agents, and US military base locations, confirming intelligence agencies would covet such data. Through GPS tracking and public sharing, Le Monde's 2024 "Stravaleaks" investigation found Macron's GSPR security members posted runs revealing the president's lodgings. Ukrainian intelligence allegedly tracked Russian captain Ladislav Rjitski, killed in 2023, via the app. Founded in 2009 by Harvard alumni Michael Horvath and Mark Gainey, Strava grew hugely during the pandemic. Valued at $2.2 billion in May 2025, it is considering an initial public offering.
