Steelers prioritized Aaron Rodgers over Justin Fields
NFL insider Albert Breer discussed the Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback strategy for the 2025 season. He clarified that the Steelers prioritized Aaron Rodgers over Justin Fields. Reports suggested that the Steelers were deeply interested in keeping Fields before he joined the New York Jets on a two-year contract worth $40 million. Breer emphasized that the Steelers decided to pursue Rodgers instead. He supported this choice but said it came with consequences, mainly for Fields. Breer pointed out that the Steelers' commitment to Fields did not make sense financially. Their focus seemed to be on acquiring either Rodgers or Sam Darnold. Darnold, however, signed with the Seattle Seahawks for over $100 million, which was beyond the Steelers' budget. The Steelers' head coach, Mike Tomlin, often chose veteran Russell Wilson over Fields during the previous season. Breer believes that Pittsburgh's hesitation to name Fields the starting quarterback led to his departure to the Jets. Both the Steelers and the New York Giants are waiting to see if Rodgers will return for the upcoming season. His decision may depend on whether the Minnesota Vikings choose to start their rookie quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, who has been recovering from an injury.
