Statins linked to 15% lower dementia risk in type 2 diabetes patients

A study presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress found that starting statins within a year of a type 2 diabetes diagnosis is linked to a 15% lower relative risk of developing dementia over 10 years. Researchers tracked health data from 132,585 Danish patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019. Those who delayed statin use for one to five years still saw a 10% lower risk, with the benefit driven primarily by reduced vascular dementia. Experts noted the findings are significant but observational, meaning they do not prove statins directly prevent dementia. The study supports earlier consideration of statin therapy in routine diabetes care, alongside lifestyle measures like diet and exercise.
