Staten Island designer launches foundation to support addiction recovery and mental health

Alexandra Nyman, a Staten Island fashion designer, has launched the Break Free Foundation to support individuals facing addiction and mental health challenges. The nonprofit offers education, advocacy, and scholarships for recovery, addressing the financial barriers many encounter. Previously, Nyman created a sober blog and recognized the need for financial assistance in recovery. The foundation now provides scholarships for marginalized groups, emphasizing that everyone deserves a chance to thrive in their recovery journey. One key initiative is "Recovery on the Runway," an annual fashion event during New York Fashion Week. This event showcases individuals in recovery, promoting mental health awareness and reducing stigma through fashion. The next show is scheduled for February 8 at Judson Memorial Church.
