St George's Church in Bloomsbury reopens with restored lions and modern community events
St George's Church in Bloomsbury, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor and completed in 1731, has undergone significant restoration. Originally, the church featured large stone lions and unicorns, which were removed in the Victorian era due to their perceived inappropriateness. After years of decline, a restoration project completed in 2008 returned the church to its original design. The church now serves a vibrant community, hosting concerts, a café, and even a Museum of Comedy, alongside its worship services. The restored church once again displays the iconic lions and unicorns, symbolizing the historical union of England and Scotland. Visitors can admire Hawksmoor's architectural achievements while enjoying the church's modern uses.
