SpaceX rocket stage crashes into moon; South Korean orbiter images show crater

SpaceX's Falcon 9 upper stage slammed into the moon on Aug. 5, creating a crater; South Korea's Danuri orbiter captured the first images of the impact site. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute released the images Thursday, showing a dark blotch and scattered debris. The spent booster hit at 5,400 mph; officials compared the view with a 2015 NASA image of the same terrain. The rocket stage flew last year's mission carrying two commercial landers. SpaceX said gravity and solar activity caused the collision, and NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will inspect the crater next week.
