South Korea's Danuri satellite captures first images of SpaceX rocket crash site on moon

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage crashed into the moon near Einstein Crater on Aug. 5, and South Korea's Danuri satellite released first images of the impact site Aug. 6. The Danuri captured before-and-after photos while in orbit. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to examine the site next week. The rocket piece, traveling at 5,400 mph, came from a January 2025 launch that sent private lunar landers to the moon. It had remained in orbit around Earth on a 26-day cycle until solar activity and gravity sent it on an accidental collision course. Experts expected a flash and ejecta plume but no danger to Earth.
