South Korea's Danuri orbiter photographs Falcon 9 crater near Einstein on moon

A SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage crashed into the moon on Aug. 5, and South Korea's Danuri orbiter captured images of the resulting crater. The 8,800-pound second stage hit near Einstein crater at about 5,400 mph, creating an estimated 60-foot-wide, 12-foot-deep crater. Independent astronomer Bill Gray first predicted the collision. The stage was left in an uncontrolled orbit after launching Firefly Aerospace's lunar lander in January 2025. NASA is also searching for the site with its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.
