South Bruce votes narrowly in favor of hosting nuclear waste site

The Municipality of South Bruce in Ontario has voted to host a deep geological repository for nuclear waste, with 51% in favor. The vote was close, with only a 78-vote difference among 3,130 ballots cast. Mayor Mark Goetz expressed surprise at the tight results but acknowledged the decision. Nearly 70% of eligible voters participated, making the results binding. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is now focused on selecting a site for the $26-billion project, with South Bruce and Ignace as the final candidates. Local First Nations' agreement is also required.
