Sony reveals PS5 Pro GPU relies on older tech but enhances ray tracing with future upgrades
Sony's new PlayStation 5 Pro features a GPU primarily based on older RDNA 2 technology, ensuring compatibility with the original PS5. However, it incorporates some elements from RDNA 3, enhancing performance without requiring separate code paths for developers. The PS5 Pro introduces upgraded ray-tracing capabilities from a future RDNA generation, likely RDNA 4. This includes improvements in BVH performance and stack management, which significantly boost ray-tracing speeds compared to the original PS5. While the PS5 Pro's GPU is larger and more complex, offering a real-world performance increase of about 45%, ray tracing is reported to be 100% to 200% faster. This advancement suggests that AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 GPUs may close the performance gap with competitors.
